The Business Challenge
Every three years the Volvo Ocean Race around the world takes place. Seven teams battle it out to be crowned champions in a gruelling year long challenge which pushes its participants to their physical and mental limits.
Sponsored by global hygiene and forest products company, SCA, Team SCA were the first all female team to compete in the race in 12 years and the only female team to participate in the 2014/2015 competition. SCA sponsored the yacht as part of their #amazingwomencan initiative which looks to empower women all over the world. The challenge was to maximise the sponsorship opportunity and to share race the experience straight from the boat to all the fans and advocates around the world, in real-time.
Using StoryStream SCA were able to tell a real-time story from the yacht itself, a unique experience as there was no other way to see what was going on on the boat while the crew were at sea on each leg of the competition. SCA embedded the StoryStream LiveHub via an iframe onto the team homepage. The #WeAreTeamSCA hashtag was promoted in support of the story, which showcased rich visual content from a wide range of social media sources including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
As fans and relatives keenly followed the story of the team there were over 30,000 views of the story in the last two weeks of the race. By using StoryStream SCA were able to maximise the promotion of their event sponsorship and capitalise on the buzz surrounding the team, ensuring that their campaign reach was as extended as far possible. The story will now live on as a unique showcase of the year on the boat, and everything that happened along the Team SCA journey.
